Consort is seeking a Merchant to join our Los Angeles retail store to develop business strategies and seasonal assortment plans to maximize the development of the brand, sales, and profits for the company’s retail division. The ideal candidate will be extremely flexible and thrives in a startup environment. The Consort Merchant will bring fresh market ideas, provide strategic planning for buying, and maintain inventory for specialty furniture and decor across multiple brick-and-mortar locations and e-commerce.
This position reports directly to the co-founders and Director of Operations and is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join a young, fast-growing, creative startup in the home space. Applicants should have a strong understanding of the home market, proven history as a buyer/merchant, and experience in e-commerce.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and manage all inventory for company’s brick-and-mortar locations and ecommerce.
Manage all elements of purchasing with regard to quantities, delivery dates, flow, and exit.
Onboard drop ship partners and integrate them into our purchase order process for scalability.
Maintain accurate pricing and COGS as well as track budget, analyze data, and improve margins.
Work directly with company’s Retail Managers to create seasonal inventory buying plans based on sales analytics and customer feedback.
Develop a long-lead buying plan and budget based on company’s product initiatives and yearly retail calendar.
Expedite all purchasing for custom orders, special orders, and drop ship orders.
Communicate directly with retail teams and vendors, maintaining a streamlined process from purchasing to fulfillment.
Apply financial acumen and analytical expertise to meet financial, sales, and profitability goals.
Support company’s Business Development Director in negotiating and finalizing vendor contracts and partnerships.
Maintain company’s inventory management system.
Work in tandem with company’s Digital Coordinator to ensure vendor partnerships, shipping of orders, and digital assets remain on schedule for timely upload to company website.
Perform market analysis and identify emerging trends to develop business strategies outlining strengths, weaknesses, and new opportunities.
Plan and maintain sales calendar tied to seasonality and yearly buying plan.
Compile a weekly inventory report, including data on new releases, sales, order status, and inventory management.
Maintain an in-depth knowledge of market, trends, industry, and product ideas in order to develop and maintain a successful assortment plan for specific merchandise categories.
3+ years of direct retail merchandising, ecommerce, and/or the home decor market.
Bachelor’s degree in related discipline and retail experience.
Experience working with an inventory management software.
Proficient in Quickbooks/Xero Accounting, Google products, and Shopify or other ecommerce platform.
Ability to perform inventory planning and volume forecasting.
Strong understanding of merchandising financial principles.
Excellent communication skills and negotiation skills.
Detail-oriented with strong organization, prioritization, and interpersonal skills.
Able to make timely decisions, anticipate problems, and provide creative solutions.
Financial acumen related to buying and planning - evaluate inventory, gross margin, and markdowns in order to manage financial goals of the product category and assortment.
